Why is my federal refund taking such a long time?

Asked by: ubinas 3607 views YA Discussion

I filed my taxes on February 4th via turbotax (e-filed), I got the email saying that it was accepted that same night. it is now feb 17th and I have not received anything. I contacted the IRS and they said that my taxes were still being processed, but what the heck could be taking so long?

How others found here:

  • why is my federal return taking so long
  • why is my tax return so slow 2012

Normal turn around time is 4 to 6 weeks. Try reading some financial news once in a while.

There has been a huge slow down with tax returns this year. The IRS claims it is because they are taking extra steps to avoid “tax return fraud”. They have also have had problems with the “Where is my refund” application on their website. They claim that the date the application gives you is about a week off (which is a lie.. it is more like 3-4 weeks). You are not alone, there are tons of people who are having this same problem.

I don’t think it necessarily means there are problems with it. They are probably just backlogged at this time of year. I think 3-4 weeks sounds about right.

I filed the same time. I originally had a dd of feb 15th. the 15th came and no return. I called the irs and they said there was a 2 day delay and they would be giving everyone the money today who was supposed to get theirs the 15. well has been two days and i have nothing. this is ridiclous. Lots of people got theirs on time and some earlier. i dont understand how they can try out this new system right now during peak season. they should work on that kind of stuff before people send in their w2s. there are a lot of people counting on that money. it is OUR money period.
