IRS has provided press releases and postings
Block has information on problems and anticipated dates tied to acknowledgement dates
the IRS adopted a new modernized efiling system and have encountered a series of issues with it
they have been very prompt in acknowledging returns and a bit slower inrefunding
they thought they were to be caught up today

I can tell you one thing– I use a site that does elctronic filing, and I can get my refunds back within the month, around 2 weeks or less, but sending it in the mail takes longer– about 4 weeks.

The IRS had been using the same computer system since 1985. They went to a new computer system this year and it doesn’t work well at all. The new system went into operation January 17 and crashed at 5pm that afternoon and was down for over 20 hours. It’s routinely crashed over the last week. It’s gotten so bad that the IRS has been using the old computer system since Thursday instead of the newer system.

The IRS has changed its website to state that e-filed refunds with direct deposit would take 10-21 days instead of the anticipated 7-14 days. And the IRS’s website hasn’t been helpful in giving anticipated dates of refunds. Where one day it gives one date, a day or two later the website says it never got a refund from you.

Because there are so many people trying to get $ 5000 refunds they are not entitled to, the IRS has added major anti-fraud code. To their surprise, it was kicking out a much higher percentage of tax returns than they were expecting it to.
