Why did I receive less money for my taxes then what my refund said I would receive?

Asked by: dtba 844 views YA Discussion

After filing my tax refund with my accountant, I was told I was going to receive roughly $ 1300 in tax refund money. When I checked my bank account today I had a check given for $ 450, I had it direct deposited. I recently got out of college 2 years ago and 2011 was my first working year and I definitely filled out 0′s on my tax forms in order to not owe the government anything when tax time came along. Is there any reason I received less money then what I was originally told?

There are a few reasons why, but you need to ask your accountant to find out the REAL reason. No one here knows the actual reason.

Do you owe money on your student loans and are you in default? The Dept of the Treasury’s Financial Management Service may have taken out money out of your refund to pay those past due student loans. But to find out for sure, contact your accountant.

You will receive a letter telling you the problem. Talk to your accountant.

Go to http://www.irs.gov and use the Where’s my Refund tool. It should show the reduced amount and a link to some explanation. Sometimes the explanations are generic and not very helpful, but sometimes they are. And, as previously stated, you will receive a letter of explanation.
