Your daughter must be under the age of 19 (under 24 if enrolled as a full time student for at least part of five months of the calendar year) on the last day of the tax year in order to qualify as a dependent for the earned income credit.

    Ignore what you have “heard”.

You can claim her up until age 19 if she is not a student and up until age 24 if she is a student.

At 17, the $ 1000 child tax credit is no longer applicable but you can still claim her.

You heard wrong. As long as you can claim her under the Qualifying Child rule you can still claim the EIC. As a full-time student she can be a Qualifying Child up until she turns 24. If she’s not a full-time student, it drops to age 19. Her age on Dec 31 is what matters, not her age when you get around to filing your return.

She is too old to claim the Child Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit. Those expire once she turned 17.

Age on the last day of each tax year is what counts so she was still 17 on December 31 2012 RIGHT. Now she will become age 18 in February of 2013 RIGHT so on December 31 2013 she will still be 18 and UNDER the age of 19 for the 2013 tax year filing season that will begin by the middle or end of January 2014 RIGHT and would have attended school through the month of June to graduate during the year 2013 tax year RIGHT.
Hope that you find the above enclosed information useful. 01/15/2013
