Washington/Oregon Taxes and Residency?

Asked by: 33 views Tax Discussion

Hi, I just moved to Vancouver, Washington from Albany, Oregon. I work for the railroad and had to move to Wash. for work but still own a house in Oregon to rent out. Are there any advantages/disadvantages to working and living in Wash. but owning property in Oregon as far as Income Tax/Property Tax/Sales Tax are concerned?

There’s no income tax in WA, so that’s a plus. You live close enough to OR to go shopping–so double bonus. The property tax between the two states really seems to be about even.

As you probably know, Oregon has no sales tax, while Washington has no state income tax. The best situation is to live in a place like Vancouver, so you pay no state income tax, but drive across the Columbia River to Oregon to buy things. In fact, that’s one of the reasons that the Jantzen Beach shopping center is where it is; there wasn’t anything near it on the Oregon side when it was built. Also, several decades ago, Washington had its state police (or whatever they’re called in Washington) trying to stop cars with Washington license plates driving over the bridge between Oregon and Vancouver so that they could demand that drivers open their trunks to show whether they’d bought anything in Oregon.

I can’t think of any particular advantage to working in living in Washington but owning property in Oregon, though.

Although WA does not have an income tax, OR does and you still must claim that rental income in OR. You’ll file a non-resident return showing only that income.
