Look at your pay stub, add your tax withholdings together and divide by your gross pay. Or if you want the overall percentage including social security and medicare, divide take home by gross and subtract from 100.

The %age taken out depends upon how you filled out your W4 – Statement of Withholding. That guides your employer as to how much you want taken out for taxes. For state taxes, divide the state taxes withheld by your gross income. For federal taxes, divide the federal taxes withheld by your gross income.

Gross income = income before ANY deductions.

In NC, as in every other state, it is against the law to take out the same percentage from every employee. Employers must use the official tax tables, not a percentage.
