Tax Requirments for 18 year olds?

Asked by: posadas 800 views YA Discussion

My question is “If im 18 years old, only working 10 or so hours a week, and go to school for 11 credit hours; do i have to file a taxe return?” I really dont know too much about taxes so any information will help! Ive had a part time job for about 2 in a half months now. When i first started i was not going to school but as of now i am. Im attending school at 11 credit hours. so i know im supposed to change my tax info to let them know im going to school and Ive been paying taxes on my pay checks.

u get to pay taxes on pay checks no problem

visit library for free info n if you need to file.

doesn’t matter if u going to school.
payroll taxes are not affected by school.

It is about income and nothing else. If you make less than 5950 you can file exempt and they will not take out state or federal. If they took it out in 2012 you can file for a refund.

If you are under age 19, do not provide over 50% of your own support, and lived with your parents (or other close relative like a grandparent, aunt, uncle, older sibling) for more than six months, you are a dependent. I assume you are a dependent.

You do not have to tell payroll about school, it will not affect your payroll.

If you have earned more than $ 5,950, you must file a tax return. If you earned less, you do not have to file. If you have had federal income tax taken out of your pay, the only way to get that back is to file a tax return.
