Tax deductions, a new roof?

Asked by: allcreaturesvh 1014 views YA Discussion

We bought a home this August, and the sellers had a new roof put on in march of 2012… A friend told me that it’s a tax deduction, which I read that asphalt is, but since the receipt has the previous owners name, then that shouldn’t be a deduction we could use… Right? Just random thought!

How others found here:

  • new roof tax deduction 2013
  • are new roofs tax deductible
  • irs roof deduction

    The credit expired 12/31/2011.

Even if the credit was still around, you didn’t pay for it. (PS, most roofs did NOT qualify.)

It increases the seller’s basis in the property

You did not pay for the roof, thus it is not a deduction fopr you, even if such a deduction was available.
