NYS Tax Return Under Further Review?

Asked by: bellmont 3942 views YA Discussion

I e-filed my 2012 federal and state returns on January 31, 2013. The federal was accepted on February 1, the state (NYS) was accepted on February 4. The federal refund has already been deposited into my account on February 8, but the state has been displaying the following message since the day it was accepted:

“We received your return and it required further review which could take up to 60 days to complete. If you receive correspondence from us, you should respond as soon as possible.”

My tax return hasn’t changed from the previous few years. In fact, I’m actually getting a smaller refund this year ($ 420) than last year. From what I’ve seen elsewhere on the internet, a lot of NYS filers are getting the same message, but I’m a bit concerned with the fact that it’s been 8 days since acceptance. Has anyone else from NYS who received this message seen it change to anything else? If yes, how long did it take?

Thank you for the info! Would you mind sharing how long it took the “further review” message to change to “processing”?

@welcome to my world:

It certainly seems like a lot of NYS residents are getting the “further review” message. Some people are speculating that it’s a delay tactic to avoid having to pay out refunds quickly.

    The check would arrive whenever it arrive. The IRS has hired more auditors because they are within a lot of debt and trying to really keep money versus giving it away. You may not receive a check but receive a letter or notice from the IRS, it will explain the reason for the correspondence and provide instructions. Many of these letters and notices can be dealt with simply, without having to call or visit an IRS office.The notice you receive covers a very specific issue about your account or tax return. Generally, the IRS will send a notice if it believes you owe additional tax, due a larger refund or simply lied or made errors within your return.

    They are reviewing your tax return to verify the following:
    •Your income
    •The withholding you reported on your income and social security benefits
    •The tax credits you claimed
    •The household help you claimed
    •Your business income

    They could be holding your refund pending the results of their review. Take Care

    I received the same message and when I called she stated that everyone is getting the same message..it means it’s processing. Mine is now saying final stages of processing and will be sent in 21 days..could take up to four weeks.
