Married with one kid- both me and my spouse work. How many exemptions should we claim on our W-4?

Asked by: epondel 794 views YA Discussion

We owed this year. Should I claim 2 (for me and our son) and he claim 0? Or should I claim my son and my husband claim 1 for himself? I am SO confused. Help! Right now I claim 3 and he claims 1 and we owed! :(

How others found here:

  • both spouses work and 2 children personal allowances
  • do spouses claim each other as exemptions
  • how many allowances should i take both work married

Without knowing how much you each made, or how much you owed, no way to say.

For each $ 500 you owed, subtract one allowance from the W-4 of the higher earner. That should be a good start.

Visit IRS website http://www.irs.gov and use the withholding calculator to help you figure how many to claim on your w4.

but it does seem right to have one of you claim 0 and the other 2.

    good luck.
