Is adjusted gross income & taxable income the same thing?

Asked by: megan 556 views YA Discussion

I’m e-filing my 2010 income tax returns, and I need to know the adjusted gross income (AGI) from last years, 2009 tax returns.
I used the regular form 1040 for 2009′s tax returns, instead of the 1040EZ.

So my question: Is the amount on line #43 of form 1040… “Taxable income”, the same as the “adjusted gross income” listed on form 1040EZ?

There is no AGI listed on the 1040 form that I filed last year, like there is on this years 1040EZ form.

Thanks in advance.

No, not even close. Look at the bottom of the first page of form 1040 or 1040A for the line that says adjusted gross income. That is BEFORE your standard or itemized deductions, and your exemptions, and subtracted.

No this is 2 different things on your correctly completed 1040 income tax returns.
    1040EZ 4 Add lines 1, 2, and 3. This is your adjusted gross income. $ $ $ $ amount
6 Subtract line 5 from line 4. If line 5 is larger than line 4, enter -0-. This is your taxable income. $ $ $ amount.
    1040 income tax form
37 Subtract line 36 from line 22. This is your adjusted gross income $ $ $ $ amount
    1040 page 2 line 43 Taxable income. Subtract line 42 from line 41. If line 42 is more than line 41, enter -0- .$ $ $ amount.
Hope that you find the above enclosed information useful. 08/04/2011

1/ From form 1040EZ, line 4 is your AGI, line 6 is your taxable income

2/ From 1040, line 38 is your AGI, line 43 is your taxable income.

If you have a copy of your 2010 form 1040, you will find your “Adjusted Gross Income” on both lines 37 (bottom of first page) and 38 (top of second page). In fact, the line says “Adjusted Gross Income”.

nope – there could be additional credits against AGI to get to taxable income
