i dont have my socail security card, but i know it by heart. can i still file taxes?

somehow lost mine and my sons social security cards, right before i went to do my taxes. Can i just give the tax prep our numbers or do i have to have the actual card with me?

How others found here:

  • can i file for ss if i dont have a ss card
  • dont have social card license

    Yes. You don’t need your card to file tax returns.

    I don’t think you’ll need the card but you can just go file for new ones. You’ll get them in 2 weeks.

    Of course, silly. It’s best to keep the number forever memorized in your brain anyway.

    The times you’ll the card is get yourself a passport, state ID, license documents, etc. Many cases also require you to have one for renewals as well. That said, go to your state website and print the renewal form and get the government to send you a new one. Simple.

    You do not need your card, but I would suggest you all call Social Security and obtain replacement cards. They will be the same SS number. When you receive them store them in a safe place.

    that will depend on the preparer
    I like to make a copy of the card for my files, not all do
    you need to get duplicates, at least notify SSA that you are missing the cards, if they are in the hands of someone else you could have a raft of problems
