Pennsylvania has a flat 3.07% wage tax. Your employer will withhold exactly 3.07% of your pay for PA wage tax regardless what you put down on your W-4. In addition, there may be a local tax withheld depending on where in PA you work and/or live. Finally, the PA Dept of Labor withholds (in 2011) 0.08% for unemployment tax.

So, at $ 8.87/hour, PA income tax withheld will be about 27 1/4 cents per hour and unemployment will be around 0.7 cents per hour. Local in most places is 1%, so expect about 8.7 cent/hour taken for local.

The IRS (federal wage tax) will be $ 0 if you earn $ 8.87/hour and claim Single 0 on your W-4 and work only 6 hours/week.

So, adding it all up (and assuming 1% local), you will have 36.65 cents per hour taken from your wages. You will net around $ 51 per week. In other words, you will take home around $ 51/week.

(Oh, 36h/w. Different story. The rate/hour for PA, Local, and Unemployment remain unchanged. But, the IRS rate will kick up a bit. Accoring to the tax table, at $ 8.87/h and 36h/w, if you file Single 0 on your W-4, the IRS will take $ 33/week. So, your gross pay per week will be $ 319, and your net pay will be about $ 272.80.)

(Crap, I forgot FICA. Yea, 4.2% for SS and 1.45% for Medicare. So, an additional 50.1 cents per hour will be taken out for FICA which leaves you with a net final pay per week of $ 254.75)

    Should look like this:

    Weekly Gross Pay $ 53.22
    Federal Withholding $ 1.28
    Social Security $ 2.24
    Medicare $ 0.77
    Pennsylvania $ 1.63
    SUI $ 0.04

    -NetPay
    Net Pay $ 47.26

There might be something additional taken out for local tax – might be 1%, might be more depending on where you live and work.

Everyone before me forgot the LST tax. Most municipalities in PA have one. It can be up to $ 1 per week. It is a flat amount based on where you work.

Hey. I’m thinking about moving to Pittsburgh, PA. Next year on February 9, 2014 I will be getting a raise and I will be making $15.50. After all the taxes taking out, how much will my check be?
