How long does it take th IRS to process previous years tax returns that were mailed in?

Asked by: ubinas 2068 views YA Discussion

I finished my 2011 tax return on Jan 17th, 2012. It was accepted, but in the middle of Feb I received notice that I hadn’t filed 2007 or 2008. I did them and send them out feb. 17th. IRS received them on Feb. 21st, 2012.
I owed a little for both years. They said they would deduct what I owe from my 2011 return then release it to me. Does anyone know when I can expect my refund?
Alot of variables, I know!

    Don’t hold your breath.
You might not get a refund at all.
    Penalties could add up.

The IRS will delay your 2011 refund (if any is left after offsetting your delinquent returns) until they have processed the 2007 and 2008 returns and added the late filing penalties and late payment penalties and interest. The penalties and interest on the 2007 return will add more than 50% to what you owe for 2007. For the 2008 return it will be pretty close to 50%.

Prior year returns filed during tax season typically take 8 to 12 weeks or more to process. However since they notified you to file the missing returns it may be quicker than that IF you mailed them to the address on the notice that you received. If you mailed them to the IRS Service Center that services your state they will be processed routinely and you should plan on a 2 to 3 month delay before you see whatever is left from your 2011 refund.
