Someone filed taxes in my name last year with a w2 and I didn’t work. They received a refund. Why didn’t the IRS catch this??

Income and taxes paid are reported and paid to both the IRS and the state quarterly. Where did this person get a w-2?

Because there was a W2 showing the income, etc. How could they know it wasn’t you, it’s just a piece of paper. Maybe they should call all 300 million people who file and double check it’s really them.

How would the IRS know that you did not really work? Go to your nearest IRS office and explain what happened and let them handle it.

The IRS gives us the refund first then confirm the W-2 months later. They do it this way so the taxpayer will receive their refunds sooner so they can spend it on necessities, etc.
The criminals buys our sensitive info from a seller who stole our personal data from businesses that has your name and social security number. This is the latest fraud because it is so easy to do. This has been featured in several major network shows.
Please contact the IRS regarding this. They are aware about this scam but can only deal with it after the fact. You may have to be patient on how long before they can help you since this is the busiest time of the year for them. Good luck.
