Does it take awhile to approve tax refund?

Asked by: vpalmer 799 views YA Discussion

I’m not expecting my tax refund right away, I know it takes some time. I e-filed on Feb. 6th and received confirmation a few hours that the IRS received my taxes. How long does it take for them to typically “approve” my taxes? I am worried because some people said 48 hours, and I haven’t seen an approval at all yet.

How others found here:

  • irs refund approved
  • how long does it take the irs to approve a refund

The IRS isn’t actually taking any longer to process returns this year than in previous years- they have, however, changed the Where’s My Refund tool this year….
If you look, you’ll now see a “tracker” bar across the top showing, three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved and Refund Sent. It will no longer give you an approximate refund, as it did in previous years, until the entire process is complete. Instead, you will continue to see the generic approx 21 days until your return has been fully processed & your refund approved, at which time you’ll see a “personalized refund date,” which will tell you when you expect your refund you be deposited or check to be mailed, depending on which option you chose.
Processing time is generally quicker than 21 days- that is 21 days from the date the IRS accepted the return, not the filing date- but can, in some instances (if the return requires further review, for example), take longer. However, while the WMR tool has changed, the actual process remains the same, so you should still receive your refund within the usual time frame.
    Hope this helps!
    Good luck…

I know several people who filed around the 25 and received their return 10 days later. They are all from FL. I know several others in TN who filed before them and still nothing or are being told 6-8 weeks. I filed mine earlier this week and am still waiting on the approval and estimated delivery time. I think it just varies from person to person. Who knows it is the govt. we are talking about. Wishing all of you a speedy return.
