can I claim my younger brother?

Asked by: mflewis 375 views YA Discussion

Can i file my younger brother on my taxes? He is 18 and he did work for like 6 months in last year, He made $ 6000. I made about 22000 and my refund is too low, so i was wondering if i claim him as dependent, we live together with our mom and dad. Mom and dad are filing together. If he file his taxes he is getting like $ 500 back, if i file him as dependent thats making huge difference. So can i file him?

So, you live with your parents and your brother.

To claim him in place of your parents, you must show that your income is higher than each of your parents, that you are older than your brother and that he didn’t support himself. And of course your parents agree to not claim him.
