Because of the tax refund delay, If I efile before they start processing returns will I experience a delay?

Asked by: sleff 897 views YA Discussion

So I had no idea about this tax refund delay this year. Usually I get my W2s in mid February. However, I received them mid January this year and because of that I went ahead and efiled. I efiled with Turbo Tax and they efiled my taxes. After they sent my forms to IRS I received a message saying that the IRS won’t begin processing refunds until January 30th 2013.

My questions are, because I efiled before IRS was even open to processing refunds will I be experiencing an additional delay? Is it a first file first processing kind of deal (first come first serve)? Because I filed to early will they will put a delay on mine and start processing other peoples’ taxes because they waited until the IRS opened for tax refunds?

Your tax return has not been e-filed yet. It’s sitting on Intuit’s servers until the IRS starts accepting returns in Jan 30. In theory at least your return will be in one of the earlier processing queues but there’s no way to know for sure.

The IRS is not publishing a refund schedule any more and is only saying that 90% of taxpayers should have their refund in hand within 21 days or less if they e-file and opt for direct deposit of their refund into their bank account.
